The Champions League quarterfinal first leg matches are in the books. Just one surprise occurred during the four matches and that was Liverpool’s mauling of Manchester City, 3-0.

Bayern Munich vs. Sevilla (aggregate 2-1)
Sevilla surprised many by taking an early lead against Bayern Munich in their first leg match. However, Bayern overcame the early deficit to win 2-1. The Germans take their lead back to Munich for the second match. Away goals count as two in the Champions League, and Sevilla will need to score at least twice to qualify for the semifinals. The Spaniards will also need to prevent Bayern from scoring.

Real Madrid vs. Juventus (aggregate 3-0)
Real Madrid was expected to win its first match against Juventus, but scoring 3-0 goals without reply took everyone by surprise. Juventus doesn’t have the quality of players to hang with Madrid and overcome a three goal deficit. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice against the Italians and continues to show just why he is one of the best players in the world. Ronaldo was magnificent in the first match and his bicycle kick goal is already being considered one of the greatest of all-time.

Manchester City vs. Liverpool (aggregate 0-3)
Liverpool stormed to a 3-0 win in the first leg. The Reds played Manchester City off the park. Manchester City is the best team in England’s Premier League, but the team’s play in the previous match didn’t display Manchester City’s attacking power. Liverpool exposed Manchester City’s defensive weaknesses, which only the Reds have been able to do this term. Manchester City will have striker Sergio Aguero back from injury for the second match, which should help the club in front of goal. Liverpool only need an away goal to put the series away. Although Manchester City should win, Liverpool’s first leg win will take it through to the semifinals.

Roma vs. Barcelona (aggregate 1-4)
Roma was its own worst enemy in the first match, conceding two own goals. Barcelona is the superior side, and its first leg win wasn’t a surprise. The scoreline flattered Barcelona, but the side was on the front foot attack throughout the night. The Spanish side will win the second match of the series as well and make it into the semifinals with little trouble.
