Can Liverpool defeat Manchester City in Sunday’s Premier League showdown?

Sports books around the globe have had Manchester City as favorites to win the Premier League for some time. Why not? The team is undefeated in the league and currently sit 15 points ahead of its nearest rival Manchester United. The league trophy is as good as Manchester City’s, and there are still 16 games to play. Pep Guardiola’s team are now -10000 to win this season’s trophy, which makes the race for the title a bit of a bore. But the real question is now, will Manchester City lose a Premier League game this term?

Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool maybe the most likely opportunity to see Manchester City taste defeat for the first time this term. Liverpool has won three straight games, and the Reds have scored the second most goals in the Premier League (50). The team recently signed center-back Virgil van Dijk, and the Dutchman is a strong upgrade in the heart of the team’s defense. Yes, Liverpool could be the team to inflict a loss on Manchester City.

But here’s why they won’t.

Fair play to Liverpool, the Reds are no pushovers and the team will be playing in front of its home fans on Sunday. Liverpool has only lost twice this season, but the team’s defense has had plenty of trouble holding on to leads. Despite the addition of Van Dijk, there is no guarantee Liverpool will be able to keep out Manchester City’s excellent attack. The Sky Blues defeated Liverpool 5-0 back in September and ran complete riot against the Reds defense. Yes, Liverpool did play with 10 men after Sadio Mane was sent off with a red card, but Manchester City was prodding and poking the Reds back four long before the winger was given his marching orders.

Liverpool also have another problem going into Sunday’s showdown. The team sold attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona earlier this week. The Brazilian fetched Liverpool £142 million, which shows even casual soccer bettors that Coutinho was one of the best in the Premier League. Coutinho scored seven goals and tallied six assists this season before his departure. It is difficult to predict which player will take over the creative role that Coutinho held.

Despite Manchester City’s league leading 64 goals scored and 13 allowed, ZCode System’s Scores Predictor believes Liverpool will emerge with a 2-1 victory. It isn’t ridiculous to think Liverpool could win this fixture. The Reds won the match between the two sides at Anfield last season. In fact, Manchester City hasn’t won at Anfield since 2003. So, there is a chance Liverpool could be victorious.

While Liverpool has been selected as the winner via the ZCode System’s Scores Predictor, the moneyline favors Manchester City.

If Liverpool cannot defeat Manchester City on Sunday, the chances of the team winning the Premier League without a loss increases. It’s not the time to bet against Manchester City as the team look to extend its record without a loss.
